Shari Wilson, Chair of the Lewis & Clark Task Force of Wyandotte County, gave an update on the project at our March meeting. Ms. Wilson said the boat ramp at Kaw Point is nearly completed, and a dock and open-air education center are under construction. The big celebration, "Meeting at Kaw Point: A Convergence of Waters and Cultures", will take place from June 25 through July 4, 2004. Dedication of the newly named Lewis & Clark Historic Park at Kaw Point will be on the evening of June 25, with a fireworks display and lighting of the Riverfront Heritage trail. In addition, HWNA members voted to purchase a large dedication brick, which will be part of the pavement at the plaza area. The brick will have our association's name imprinted.

What is the Citizen's Academy? The Academy is designed to increase understanding between citizens and the Police through education. The intent is to acquaint citizens with law enforcement's role in the criminal justice system and provide increased understanding of the tasks police officers face in the daily work.
What Subjects Are Included? The sessions include demonstrations by the Identification and K-9 Units, information about domestic violence, the use of force, major crimes, Community Policing, patrol and investigations, and even completing car stops and building searches. In one session, members will "fire" the "Firearms "Training Simulators "FATS" in a videotaped enactment of a crime. Also during the five weeks, Academy members will ride in a patrol car for four hours to see firsthand what officers see and hear and what they are trained to do under a variety of circumstances. For an application or any questions, call: 913-596-2056.
