Westheight Park Clean Up

Come One, Come All on Saturday, April, 6 for our annual Park clean-up. Activity of all sorts in Westheight Park helps keep crime down. It's our park, let's get together and prepare for a fun warm season! We will meet from 10 in the morning to noon. All ages can be helpful. We will finish with refreshments.

Congratulations to a Neighbor

According to The Record, Essie Baker is one of thirteen employees of the Unified Government who volunteered in the American Red Cross "Desk to Disaster" program. The 2002 American Red Cross' North Central Regional "Good Neighbor Award" was awarded to the U.G. for demonstrating exceptional initiative in identifying and meeting community needs. The Red Cross needed help in providing daytime response to single family and apartment fires in the community; the Unified Government employees responded.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Essie is one of those volunteers. Congratulations, Essie!

Just a reminder that April Target of the Month is Rubbish/Trash/Debris on your property. If there is a problem with this in our neighbor-hood please let me know. 371-4895.
Remember, it takes all of us to keep our neighborhood looking nice.
FYI: The house at 1827 Walker was brought down on March 21st.

Our Thoughts are with You!

A new feature this month is designed to let neighbors know about those who are ill or have had a death in their family. Please give me a call if you or a neighbor is ill or have experienced a loss so we as HWNA can reach out to them by sending them a card.

We hope that by sharing this in our newsletter that you in turn will also send a card or call them or even drop by with a dish to let you know they are in “our thoughts”. Thanks for helping our neighbors to be remembered. Gayle Copeland: 621-1529.

Those who are ill or recovering:
Eddis Sayles
Ernie Lewis

Traffic Calming

by Wayne Walden, HWNA Past-President 2002

By the time you read this newsletter there should be some changes in the temporary traffic calming devices. At 18th Street and Washington Blvd. there will be an "island" in the middle of the street that will separate the vehicles; the existing rubber curbs will be removed and relocated to provide more space. The same holds true at State Ave & Washington Blvd. These changes are a result of feedback from neighbors voicing concern of the possibility of two vehicles on slippery pavement getting too friendly with each other.

Hopefully, at our April 2nd meeting we will have recent traffic count data that gives us numbers of vehicles and their speed. As well, we are looking forward to having revised landscape drawings that show a similarity to the stone standards at 18th & Washington Blvd. The neighborhood board has suggested that the round-abouts at 20th, 22nd and 24th streets contain stone standards, ornamental lighting and other low-maintenance landscaping features that complement and enhance our attractive neighborhood. It is these devices that are intended to be permanent. We will discuss the estimated costs for traffic calming, the city's share, the boundary and the procedure for a benefit district.

Be a Responsible Pet Owner!

Animal control has a tough job. To do your part, please:

1. Spay or neuter your animal to keep your pet from increasing the population of unwanted strays.

2. Obey leash laws so that you can keep your dog away from strays, garbage, children, etc.

3. License your pet with the city.

4. Call Animal Control when you see stray animals.
